Sustainable tourism, as defined by the UN World Tourism Organization, considers the economic, social, and environmental impacts of tourism while addressing the needs of visitors, industries, and local communities. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted in 2015 by all UN member states, aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and improve lives by 2030. These 17 interconnected goals require global collaboration from governments, businesses, civil society, and others. As we approach the midpoint of SDG implementation, there is concern that many targets will be missed by 2030, particularly in tourism destinations, if sustainable tourism and SDG alignment remain undefined and unmeasured. Destination organization leaders face challenges in determining where to begin, which SDGs to prioritize, and how to measure progress. This webinar will help leaders navigate these complexities, offering guidance on defining sustainable tourism for their destinations and aligning with the SDGs.
